Sony tablets revealed: iPad 2 rival S1 and PlayStation S2

Sony has finally played its hand in the tablet market. It has announced two Android 3.0 tablets, the S1 and S2, each with considerably different form factors. Read on for more details.

Little is known about the internal specs of the two tablet devices revealed at Sony’s Tokyo press event, with the focus firmly on the outer shells and one or two key services.

The Sony S1 will be a ‘traditional’ 9.4-inch Tegra 2-powered tablet, although it will differ from the likes of the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 by offering an unusual wedge shape. Apparently this makes it easier to hold, but we can see it having a benefit when typing on a flat surface.

The Sony S2 is even more unusual, featuring as it does a fold-away clamshell design – a bit like a Nintendo DS (or, if you want to be up to date, a 3DS). It too is powered by the Tegra 2 dual-core processor. When opened up, the S2 sports two 5.5-inch screens that can work in conjunction or separately.

The latter application in particular was shown being applied to games, with the top screen showing the game running (the PlayStation classic Crash Bandicoot has been used as an example) and the bottom being dedicated to virtual controls. Yep, both the S2 and the S1 will be PlayStation certified, making them the first Sony devices since the Xperia Play to be announced with such accreditation. That means they’ll get a suite of classic PlayStation games and a healthy batch of timed exclusives.

Both devices will comes with support for Qriocity, Sony’s music and video streaming service. If you own a PlayStation 3, you’ll likely have encountered it already.
